The multiple award-winning Ghanaian dancehall boss, Shatta Wale emerged atop Ghana’s list for Billboard’s Local Heroes, the most-watched homegrown artists across Africa. With total local views of 13.2 million on YouTube, Shatta Wale emerged as the artist with the highest local views in Ghana.
Ghana’s only BET award winners, Sarkodie and Stonebwoy took the second and third places respectively. Sarkodie had 11.72 million views locally, whilst Stonebwoy had 7.8 million views.
Moreover, the remaining two acts making it into Ghana’s top five were Diana Hamilton and Kofi Kinaata. They had 6.42 million views and 4.63 million views respectively.
This is a remarkable feat for all the artists who made it into the list. As it recognizes the top five homegrown musical acts from 11 African countries, based on a year YouTube views. This implies that all the youtube views quoted above, used for the ranking, were their deducted local views. Thus, the YouTube views within the artist’s home country.
All YouTube views of the artists which come from outside their country of origin were subtracted from their total views to arrive at the current figures. Therefore, artists with higher international youtube views relative to that of their local views tend to rank lower in this list.
Meanwhile, the eleven African countries also included Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Mozambique, Senegal, and Tanzania.
