A 40-foot shipping container stashed with several cartons of addictive opioids valued at around GHS 20 million has been intercepted by customs officials at the Tema Port.
The cargo bound for Niger contained several cartons of addictive opioids like Tafrodol, Rahol, Tapentadol, Loperamide, and a lot more in different doses.
It was revealed that Ghana was only a transit point for the transportation of the cargo to Niger. This incident has raised great concern about our security and how West Africa is gradually becoming a haven for drug smuggling.
Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, speaking during a press briefing at the Tema Port, reassured the public that the government will roll out measures to counter the problem of smuggling addictive opioids through Ghana.
He also stated that the government will provide all the necessary logistics to ensure the effective operation of all stakeholders involved in the fight against this imminent problem. Mr Mintah Akandoh also urged the public to provide all necessary tip-offs to help authorities intercept them swiftly.
Ghana is gradually getting engulfed in the current opioid crisis faced by many countries in the West African sub-region. Drug addicts have become more rampant in our society, requiring the swift intervention of authorities.
Many Ghanaian youth are now getting ‘high’ on a higher dose of tramadol, often marketed as Tafrodol. This addictive opioid is popularly known in Ghana as “Red 225,” and several videos are circulating on social media involving drug users in a dilapidated state after abusing these drugs.
