Is The US Making A Silent Move Against Burkina Faso President, Ibrahim Traore

Ibrahim Traore, the incumbent president of Burkina Faso, has been the talk of the town across Africa and beyond. The military leader seized power after leading a bloodless coup against the democratic government in late 2022.

Traore rolled out several policies after assuming the seat of the presidency, including the construction of Burkina Faso’s first-ever domestic gold refinery in November 2023. This policy was aimed at adding value to the primary gold ore while providing job opportunities for the youth.

He also rolled out a policy in 2024, banning all small-scale gold exports in a bid to prevent the smuggling of gold across the region. Strict adherence to this policy would provide a significant boost to the revenue generated from official gold exports.

Barely two years after assuming office, Captain Ibrahim Traore has brought significant growth to Burkina Faso. A few weeks ago, news spread across several media houses about the Burkina government’s move to make education free at all levels.

The remarkable performance of the military junta has not gone unnoticed by the hegemons of powerful nations.

The US Africa Command Head General, Michael Langley, has made certain accusatory statements against Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traore. He alleged that Traore was using the country’s gold reserves for personal gain instead of benefiting the populace during a US Senate hearing.

Captain Ibrahim Traore was accused of enriching himself with Burkina Faso’s gold reserves in order to protect himself.
