Pascal Akotia appointed Judicial Chairperson of KNUST Obuasi SRC

Pascal Akotia was appointed Judicial Chairperson of KNUST Obuasi SRC by the incoming SRC administration.

The next SRC Administration of the KNUST Obuasi SRC, the forthcoming Martin-Fosu-led administration seems very promising. From their resounding victory at the polls to their policy lineup, they ostensibly have all the odds in their favor.

The said administration is yet to launch into full operation. However, as a matter of constitutional prerequisite, they have appointed a Judicial Chairperson. The Martin-Fosu-led administration appointed Mr. Pascal Akotia as the Judicial Chairperson for the 2022/2023 academic year.

The meritorious appointment is in pursuance of chapter 5 article 20 clause 11 (a) of the KNUST OBUASI CAMPUS SRC constitution 2021. Similarly, in line with the provision noted, Mr. Pascal Akotia would be sworn in on the 23rd of September, 2022. Thus, at the 3rd swearing-in and second handover ceremony of the KNUST Obuasi SRC.

MOG wins KNUST Obuasi SRC President elections

Speaking of the Judicial Chairperson designate, Mr. Pascal Akotia, he was the deputy Judicial chairperson of the erstwhile Abban-led Administration. He ably assisted His Lordship Zaid Shamuna. During their tenure, the SRC Judicial Council they led earned great visibility among the student populace.

Moreover, their impressive grip on court proceedings during the SRC’s pre-election litigations was such a sight to behold. Thus, talkless of the trust their posture commanded and the calm it restored following the pronouncement of their judgments. The delivery on their mandate was nothing short of a yeoman’s. That is why Mr. Pascal Akotia’s appointment is of utmost laudability.

Meanwhile, the KNUST Obuasi SRC’s second handover ceremony is slated for tomorrow at the school’s OSC Auditorium. The august occasion is open to all students of the school.

Showmax confirms The Real Housewives of Nairobi, slated to begin production in September

African streaming service Showmax, in partnership with NBCUniversal Formats, is bringing The Real Housewives to Nairobi.

The Real Housewives of Nairobi, which will debut in 2023 as a Showmax Original, is the 22nd international version of The Real Housewives format and the sixth to be adapted in Africa.

The Real Housewives of Nairobi builds on the success of other African franchises like The Real Housewives of Johannesburg, which was one of the 10 most streamed domestic series on Showmax in 2019, as well as Durban (RHOD) and Lagos (RHOLagos), which both broke records on Showmax and were trending #1 on Twitter in their respective countries.

Denise Mwende, Showmax Content Specialist in East Africa, said: “As an African streaming platform, Showmax is dedicated to telling diverse African stories, and celebrity reality TV remains a genre that excites our viewers across Africa. We love to watch other people’s lives, and The Real Housewives of Nairobi is a chance to get a much closer look at Nairobi’s elite.”

The Real Housewives of Nairobi is being produced by Eugene Mbugua’s D&R Studios (formerly Young Rich Television), the production company behind Kenya’s biggest docu-reality shows and Showmax favourites like the 2021 Kalasha nominee Sol Family; the 2021 Kalasha nominee and 2022 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice (AMVCA) nominee This Love; 2022 reality series Kyallo Kulture; 2018 Kalasha nominee Stori Yangu and 2019 Kalasha winner Our Perfect Wedding.

“The team at D&R Studios is very stoked about the opportunity to produce The Real Housewives of Nairobi,” said Mbugua. “We’ve had a long and good relationship with Showmax, and are very excited to now be working together on an international format. We’ve gone through a very rigorous process of being shortlisted and are now geared up and ready to start production.”

“D&R Studios already has a portfolio of celebrity reality content like Sol Family, This Love and Kyallo Kulture under their belt. They understand the structure, and are willing to work hand in hand with our local teams and NBCUniversal to bring the Nairobi franchise to life,” added Denise Mwende.

On what the audience can expect with Nairobi, following the success of other African franchises, Mbugua said, “There’s quite a bit of pressure from the audience to deliver a stellar show but if what we’ve seen in the casting process is anything to go by, Nairobi promises to hold its own. Fans can expect surprises in everything, from the choice of the cast to the storylines. The Real Housewives of Nairobi is going to be the show to watch.”

As you wait for The Real Housewives of Nairobi, you can binge-watch these African franchises on Showmax: The Real Housewives of Lagos, The Real Housewives of Durban S1-2 and The Real Housewives of Johannesburg S1-2.

Tilakou’s La Tohme album, an inspiration to spur change in his society.

Society is where everyone comes from. When you look back at the one you came from, the least you do is spur a change by lighting a ray of hope. This was exactly what rapper, Tilakou did with his La Tohme album.

Nigerian Wunmi Mosaku on her award-winning role in HBO crime drama We Own This City

• Nigerian actress Wunmi Mosaku won Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series at the 2022 Black Reel Awards for her role as Nicole Steele in HBO crime drama We Own This City
• Co-created by David Simon (The Wire’s creator)
• 93% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes
• Based on the true story of America’s Gun Trace Task Force scandal
• “Humane, thrilling, and infuriating… a blistering and brilliant cop show about the corrosion of American law enforcement and America itself.” Entertainment Weekly

Fans of The Wire, thank me later…

Fun fact: Wunmi Mosaku is a Nigerian-British actress with Ghanaian roots – her grandmother was born and raised in Kumasi, Ghana.

Nigerian Wunmi Mosaku won Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series at the 2022 Black Reel Awards for her role as Nicole Steele in We Own This City, which is now available to binge on Showmax. The HBO crime drama was also nominated for Outstanding Limited Series, Directing (Reinaldo Marcus Green of King Richard fame), Writing (for D. Watkins), and Supporting Actor (Jamie Hector from The Wire and Bosch).

According to a 2021 BBC Culture Critics’ poll, HBO’s hit 2000s crime drama series The Wire is still “the greatest TV series of the 21st Century”. With We Own This City, The Wire’s creator, Emmy winner David Simon, returns to Baltimore for the first time, to chronicle a real-life scandal that broke in 2017: the story of a city held to ransom by its own police force when the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of meaningful police work.

Simon and co-creator George Pelecanos (The Wire, The Deuce) adapted the six-part series from the non-fiction book We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption by Baltimore crime reporter and Pulitzer Prize finalist Justin Fenton, about the corrupt Gun Trace Task Force. “This is not just make-believe,” says Green. “Every story in this series was based on some real-life, true event… It feels authentic because it is.”

Wherever possible, filming took place in the actual locations where the events happened, drawing extensively on the evidence and court documents relating to each incident to recreate it in detail.

“It was quite emotional to be hearing the stories from passersby telling us what it felt like, and what hasn’t changed, and what needs to change,” says Mosaku, who won a BAFTA for Damilola, Our Loved Boy and a British Independent Film Award for His House; was nominated for Critics Choice, Critics Choice Super and Screen Actors Guild awards for Lovecraft Country; and has acted in Emmy-nominated shows like Loki, Luther and The End of The F***king World.

In We Own This City, Mosaku’s character, Nicole Steele, is one of the few who is not based on any one real-life individual, but rather represents a number of people in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. “I felt like Nicole while I was reading the scripts,” Mosaku told The Guardian. “I was like, ‘How did this happen?!’”

“It feels so necessary to tell this story right now,” Mosaku said on the We Own This City Podcast. “There’s a rot in the system that a lot of people are shouting about, but a lot of people are deaf to.”

For the actress, who was born in Zaria in Nigeria but has lived most of her life in the UK, the issues raised in the series are both personal and very real. “It’s very different living here now and being Black in America, being married to an African American, knowing that my future is here and therefore, my safety is in the hands of the people in charge. It’s very sobering and scary. It does feel different, being in a country where police officers have guns. That’s not a thing in the UK.”

“[It’s] extraordinary… that the word ‘police’ doesn’t evoke the feeling of safety in you. That’s so profound; I feel like so many people just ignore that. They just don’t relate to that. And I have to acknowledge that I have a privilege – in the UK, as a woman, I’ve never really encountered the police, whereas all of my Black male friends have. And then in the US, when we get stopped by the police, the way they interact with my husband? Very, very intimidating. Very, very scary for me. We’ve made a little thing, where I make sure I say something… in a very, very English accent, and the crazy thing is, the next thing that generally comes out of their mouth is like, ‘Oh, hey, where are you from?’ The interaction completely changes because my accent now makes them interact with my humanity. I don’t know what it is, but all of a sudden, they’re like, ‘Oh, she’s British.’”

On what she hopes viewers will take away from the series, Mosaku says, “Whether or not you feel safe, if the police, and policing, and the justice system and the society is corrupt, we’re not safe. If there is that kind of pain being inflicted by the people that you deem safe, you’re not safe.”

Mosaku adds, “This needs [to be] addressed and fixed and cut out, and replaced and reimagined, so that there is actually room for hope. ‘Cause we’re all here, sharing it, and some people get the luxury of feeling hopeful. And some people just… don’t.”

In addition to Mosaku and Hector, We Own This City also stars Screen Actors Guild Award nominee Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead); Emmy nominee Josh Charles (The Good Wife); Black Reel nominee David Corenswet (Hollywood, The Politician); SAG Award winner Dagmara Domińczyk (Succession’s Karolina Novotney); and The Wire alums Darrell Britt-Gibson, Domenick Lombardozzi, Tray Chaney, Delaney Williams, Jermaine Crawford, Anwan Glover, Chris Clanton, Nathan Corbett, Maria Broom, Susan Rome and Michael Salconi.

We Own This City has a 93% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics’ consensus calling it “a spiritual successor to The Wire.” Entertainment Weekly praises We Own This City as “humane, thrilling, and infuriating… a vital frontline depiction of American unrest” and asks, “What happened to our cultural reckoning with TV cops? After the murder of George Floyd led to global protests, the future of onscreen police looked grim. [But]… tough-on-crime electioneering has already trickled down to television, where well-funded paramilitary hero police defend good citizens from obvious bad dudes. Welcome to 2022, where 2020 never happened. So thank holy hell for We Own This City, a blistering and brilliant cop show about the corrosion of American law enforcement and America itself.”

Queen Elizabeth II dies, Buckingham Palace announces

  • Queen Elizabeth II dies, Buckingham Palace announces
  • Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.

Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday.

The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change.

With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country in mourning as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

“The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

All the Queen’s children travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision.

Her grandson, Prince William, is also there, with his brother, Prince Harry, on his way.

Queen Elizabeth II’s tenure as head of state spanned post-war austerity, the transition from empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War and the UK’s entry into – and withdrawal from – the European Union.

Her reign spanned 15 prime ministers starting with Winston Churchill, born in 1874, and including Liz Truss, born 101 years later in 1975, and appointed by the Queen earlier this week.

She held weekly audiences with her prime minister throughout her reign.

At Buckingham Palace in London, crowds awaiting updates on the Queen’s condition began crying as they heard of her death. The Union flag on top of the palace was lowered to half-mast at 18:30 BST.

The Queen was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, in Mayfair, London, on 21 April 1926.

Few could have foreseen she would become monarch but in December 1936 her uncle, Edward VIII, abdicated from the throne to marry the twice-divorced American, Wallis Simpson.

Elizabeth’s father became King George VI and, at age 10, Lilibet, as she was known in the family, became heir to the throne.

Within three years, Britain was at war with Nazi Germany. Elizabeth and her younger sister, Princess Margaret, spent much of wartime at Windsor Castle after their parents rejected suggestions they be evacuated to Canada.

After turning 18, Elizabeth spent five months with the Auxiliary Territorial Service and learned basic motor mechanic and driving skills. “I began to understand the esprit de corps that flourishes in the face of adversity,” she recalled later.

Through the war, she exchanged letters with her third cousin, Philip, Prince of Greece, who was serving in the Royal Navy. Their romance blossomed and couple married at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947, with the prince taking the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

She would later describe him as “my strength and stay” through 74 years of marriage, before his death in 2021, aged 99.
