Renowned Ghanaian undercover investigative journalist has won a defamation lawsuit against former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
Anas Aremeyaw Anas filed a lawsuit against the Assin Central MP after certain defamatory remarks he made about the journalist referring to him as an extortionist and a blackmailer.
The journalist initially filed a lawsuit against Kennedy Agyapong at the High Court in Accra, but Justice Eric Baah dismissed the case because there was no evidence to back his claims.
Anas Aremeyaw Anas filed another lawsuit at an Essex County Jury in the United States, where he won a defamatory case against Kennedy Agyapong. The Essex County Jury instructed Kennedy Agyapong to pay the journalist about $18 million in damages and legal costs.
The journalist, often seen in public spaces with a mask on to maintain an anonymous identity, appeared before the court without it. He was seen wearing a nose mask and sunglasses.
Kennedy Agyapong has reportedly appealed to the jury to reduce the $18 million penalty leveled against him. However, no additional information has been provided to the press.
This incident has got many people questioning the impartiality of the judiciary in Ghana after the case was initially dismissed by a High Court In Accra. However, a New Jersey jury ruled the case in favour of Anas Aremeyaw Anas for defamation against him by Kennedy Agyapong.
