From 1980s Club Icon to Modern Storyteller: C’batch Drops “If There Was Ever a Fool”

Sometimes a song takes years to find its story, and sometimes a story takes years to find its music. Independent composer, guitarist, and producer C’batch brings these two worlds together on his dramatic new single, “If There Was Ever a Fool (One of a Cast of Many) 1,” released on October 31, 2026. The release unites a filmed guitar improvisation from 2012 with lyrics written years later after observing a friend’s real-life relationship, bringing a 14-year creative journey to a compelling finish.

Written after that relationship ended, the song takes an ironic and occasionally humorous look at love and the questionable choices people make in its name. Musically, the track marks a fresh direction for C’batch. It surrounds expressive electric guitar with cinematic orchestration and ambient textures, creating a theatrical atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the dark comedy of the storytelling.

Stephen H. Cumberbatch, professionally known as C’batch, brings more than four decades of experience to his craft. Operating out of White Plains, New York, his musical roots reach back to the city’s influential 1980s dance scene.

His catalogue includes classic club tracks like Sinnamon’s “I Need You Now” and NV’s “Let Me Do You” (mixed by Shep Pettibone). In 1984, he and his wife, Yvette, founded Stevette Music, Inc., which continues to serve as the home for his extensive body of work.

The single arrives as part of C’batch’s ongoing 2026 project, “The Vault,” a multi-volume series dedicated to opening his archives and releasing compositions accumulated across decades.

Following recent successes, including an honourable mention at the International Music Video Awards for “Next Time” and his reggae EP “I Guess You Want It This Way,” C’batch continues to bridge genre boundaries. “If There Was Ever a Fool” stands as an inventive testament to the power of artistic patience and original storytelling.
