The management of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has confirmed the tragic passing of Miss Joana Deladem Yabani, a level 400 Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences student.
The deceased student was found near the KNUST Disability and Rehabilitation Centre in the early hours of February 27, 2025, by KNUST security officers.
Management of KNUST issued a statement after confirming the death of Miss Yabani and sharing their condolences with the bereaved family and friends. In the statement, the management assured the student body to seek justice for the deceased by identifying the culprits to face legal action.
True to their words, KNUST security, in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Department, has since identified and arrested one suspect in connection to Miss Yabani’s murder case. The suspect was identified through CCTV camera footage recovered by police.
The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye Cudjoe, stated in a statement, “We have identified the suspect through CCTV footage on the KNUST campus, and he is currently assisting with our investigations.”
The suspect, identified as Daniel Tuffuor, Miss Yabani’s alleged boyfriend and a fellow KNUST student, engaged in a violent confrontation with her.
During the altercation, Miss Yabani fell to the ground and became unresponsive. Realizing the situation, the suspect, Miss Yabani’s alleged boyfriend, relocated her lifeless body to the KNUST Disability and Rehabilitation Centre, where she was found.
Further reports also indicate that the suspect was present to write his mid-semester exams earlier in the day wearing the same outfit as discovered in the CCTV footage.
In a press release by the police, they ascertained the arrest of a prime suspect, which is Miss Yabani’s alleged boyfriend. They also assured the public to continue with investigations on this case.
Security around the KNUST campus has been tightened, ensuring the safety of all students and staff. The police have dispatched police officers and patrol teams to linger around the enclaves of the university campus following this unfortunate incident.
