The First Gentleman of Akyem, Osagyefo Amoatia Oforipanin, has called for the halt of all mining activities along the banks of the Birim River.
The Okyenhene has given a month’s ultimatum to all miners to rid of their mining equipment off his land or have them confiscated.
The traditional leader issued this order following a report from Ghana Water Company Limited indicating a surge in the turbidity level of unprocessed water drawn from the Birim River
The higher ups at the Ghana Water Comapny Limited has raised concerns about the potential risk the surge in the turbidity level of the water will pose on inhabitants of Kyebi and its environs.
They also stated that if nothing is done to curb the problem, their water treatment plant may break down, which will result in a halt in their operations, rendering them unable to process water for mass consumption in Kyebi and its neighbouring communities.
