The Minister of Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, has confirmed the successful deportation of about 2,000 illegal immigrants after major sweep operations by the Ghana immigration Service (GIS).
The Ghana Immigration Service conducted major sweep operations across major hotspots of these illegal migrants, including Circle, Accra Central, Kaneshie, Madina, and other places. In collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and personnel from the Ghana Police Service, thousands of illegal immigrants were apprehended.
This major crackdown operation is aimed at restoring public order and addressing escalating illegalities linked to these immigrants. Their presence on our streets has become an eyesore for many as a result of their lawlessness.
The Interior Ministry revealed that those apprehended during the operation underwent a thorough profiling session to confirm their identities and nationalities prior to their deportation. Many of the deportees, mostly nationals of neighbouring West African countries were detained at Immigration holding centres where they were provided with basic care before their deportation process was rounded up.
The government has ascertained that the operation was a necessary step to safeguard public interest and curb the growing concerns about security in the country. The rights of all deportees were upheld throughout the repatriation procedures.
