The Okponglo traffic light has been faulty for over three (3) months without any efforts by authorities to fix it. The inactivity of traffic lights at the junction has been responsible for countless vehicular accidents involving University of Ghana students, causing an outburst by the students threatening to block the road, halting the flow of traffic.
That road connects to several districts of Accra and is particularly hazardous for both pedestrians and drivers because of the heavy traffic at the intersection caused by the malfunctioning traffic light.
The Student Representative Council (SRC) of the University Of Ghana (Legon), headed by Maradona Yeboah Adjei, known by many as Guru, in an interview with UTV gave a detailed account of the problem and the measures he put in place to tackle the issue. However, after writing to the Ministry of Roads and Urban Roads, he received no positive response, rendering his efforts pointless.
He urged the various state agencies to resolve the matter once again during the interview, claiming that students from the University of Ghana (Legon) had threatened to block the route in a week if nothing was done.
Many people were interested in this topic, including Mr. John Dumelo, the member of parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon. Paying heed to the outcry of students, he engaged the necessary stakeholders to get the traffic light at Okponglo junction at the fastest pace possible to enable the free movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
Mr Dumelo posted on social media that the traffic signal controller was successfully installed with the intervention of Urban Roads. He also stated that the traffic lights will start working as soon as the civil works are complete.
This new development will help ease the unbearable traffic conditions at Okponglo Junction, guaranteeing students total safety as they commute to and from campus.
