The Ministry of Roads and Highways in a press release dated February 6, 2025, has announced its intention to reintroduce road tolls which was canceled by the past government.
The Akuffo Addo government in its manifesto during the 2020 General elections proposed the cessation of toll collection on all public roads. The government cited reasons for this policy which included the easing up of traffic congestion on our roads.
Despite concerns raised about the impact of the policy on financing of road maintenance, it was eventually implemented.
However, the current government has raised concerns about the lack of adequate funds to finance road maintenance hence the decision to reintroduce road toll collection.
The Ministry of Roads stated that it’ll be incorporating advanced technology into the collection of road tolls to alleviate the underlying problems it posed in the past.
The reintroduction of road tolls will help generate revenue to improve road networks across the country. This will provide a boost to the country’s economy as there will be effective transportation of goods and services.
The ministry has reassured the public to employ an open, transparent, and cost-effective procurement process.
