Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu orders The Reduction In Hostel Fees For University Of Ghana Students

Minister-designate in charge of Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu has ordered the management of the University of Ghana to reduce the price of hostel fees from GHS 3,000 down to GHS 2,500 for both first years and continuing students.

The minister, who was approved by parliament on January 21, 2025, following his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama as the Minister for Education, has rolled out several educational reforms, and this happens to be one of them.

Honourable Haruna has proven to be competent for the position of Minister for Education amid criticisms following his appointment.

This order was initiated following the lamentation from many students over the recent 20% increase in residential fees rolled out by the University of Ghana Management.

The University of Ghana’s management body, in response to the directive from Honourable Minister Haruna Iddrisu, offered to reduce hostel fees by 25%, which brings down the total hostel fees per semester from GHS 3000 to 2,500.

In a follow-up statement, Maradona Adjei Yeboah (Guru), President of the SRC, thanked the board for the hostel fee reduction but also made a suggestion to make refunds to students who had already paid their hostel fees in full.
