Earlier today, 30th June 2025, a high court order was issued instructing the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to release withheld results of thousands of students who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
A four-member team representing about 10,520 implicated students submitted a petition to the court requesting for a court order to be sent to WAEC to compel the council to release the withheld results of the said students.
Before this legal action, some parents stormed the WAEC office at Kumasi with their wards, demanding explanations as to why the withheld results of their wards have not been released. These wards were then asked to write statements, which were outright objected to by most parents. They demanded to remain in close range as their wards wrote the said statement instead of isolating them.
Representing the students, Lawyer Martin Kpebu argued that the rights of these students were being infringed upon by WAEC since the examining body did not provide any valid reasons for withholding the results of these students.
He stated further that the delay has hindered many students from gaining admission into various tertiary institutions, as most of them have closed their admission portals. Both parents and students implicated by this action from WAEC are in a depressive state as the future of these students hangs on the line.
However, WAEC, in an official statement after issuance of the court order stated that students and parents and students should exercise patience as the council is in the final stages of investigations regarding withheld results of students alleged to have committed various examination malpractices.
