Ghanaian-American comedian and philanthropist Michael Blackson has always been a vocal advocate for his homeland, investing heavily in initiatives like the Michael Blackson Academy, a free school in Agona Nsaba. However, his recent decision to join Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) stems from a tumultuous financial ordeal and a renewed sense of hope under the current administration.
Blackson’s journey began with a $1.2 million investment in Ghana’s Eurobonds, intended to fund his academy. Unfortunately, his funds became entangled in the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) under the previous Akufo-Addo-led NPP government. The debt restructuring left him with two unappealing options: accept a 37% cut on his investment or endure a 15-year maturity period with minimal returns. This left him frustrated and disillusioned, as his plans to support education in Ghana were derailed.
His public outcry against the NPP government gained widespread attention, with many Ghanaians sympathizing with his plight. Blackson accused the administration of misusing investor funds to service foreign debts, particularly to China, and expressed his disappointment in a series of social media posts. His story became emblematic of broader economic struggles under the NPP, contributing to growing public discontent.
The turning point came in February 2025, when President John Dramani Mahama’s administration fulfilled its DDEP obligations, paying ₵6.081 billion to bondholders and depositing ₵9.7 billion into a Sinking Fund for future payments. This move not only restored Blackson’s faith in the government but also allowed his academy to receive its due payments. Overjoyed, he declared, “As of today, I’m officially a member of the NDC party. Mahama, you just put a smile on the faces of the kids at my free school.”.
Blackson’s decision to join the NDC reflects a blend of personal relief and political alignment. While his journey has been fraught with challenges, his story underscores the power of accountability and the impact of government policies on individuals and communities. For Blackson, this is more than politics—it’s about ensuring a brighter future for Ghana’s children.
