The entirety of Ghana’s populace has been plunged into a state of joy following the 15% reduction in transport fares nationwide. This announcement was publicised by the Road Transport Operators Association and was scheduled to take effect on Friday, May 24, 2025.
Fuel prices have been reduced after the significant growth of the cedi against the dollar, hence the 15% reduction in transport fares. Many commuters heaved a sigh of relief upon the announcement of the new reduced transport fares.
However, the joyous moments have taken a sudden turn for the worse after some ‘trotro drivers’ and conductors (mates) failed to comply with the new directive issued by the Road Transport Operators Association.
A viral video has made waves on the internet, showing a distressing scene at the Circle Station in Accra. According to the passenger who shared the video online, a ‘trotro’ driver allegedly got furious after passengers insisted on paying the new transport fares instead of the old fare being charged.
Infuriated by the passenger’s lamentations, he made a U-turn back to the station where the passengers initially boarded the vehicle.
In response to the viral video, Godfred Abulbire, the General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), admitted that some drivers have failed to comply with the new transport fare reforms. He further revealed that a few drivers complained that the announcement was short notice, hence their failure to comply.
Mr. Godfred issued a stern warning to drivers who still turn a deaf ear to the new price reforms: “Reduce the fares or face sanctions.” He stated that drivers who are still defiant could be stopped from loading passengers at the various terminals or be suspended by their unions.
The GPRTU has urged all passengers to report any driver who fails to reduce their fares to fish out deviant drivers.
