The winner of the Asaase Sound Clash between Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale – #AsaaseSoundClash

Ghana’s current most celebrated dancehall musical acts, Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale went head to head in a clash last night. The first-ever virtual dancehall sound clash, which was also the maiden edition of the Asaase Sound Clash, brought on the same stage, Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale to battle it out for dancehall supremacy.

‘Who is the King of Dancehall?’ was the biggest question for the night. At the end of the night, there was surely a winner(King) as the question demanded. However, before arriving at that, there were obviously criteria. There was public voting before several days the clash and their lyrical delivery on the day of the clash was also a major determining factor.

Asaase Sound Clash

The day for the much-anticipated dancehall clash was yesterday and it was held at the plush Mƶvenpick Ambassador Hotel, Accra. The debuting Asaase Sound Clash, dubbed Clash2CrushCOVID was hosted by Seani-B and Root Eye.

BET-nominated dancehall singer, MzVee opened the show with her usual irresistible dancehall melodies on a medley of covers, hits by Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale and sealing it up with her addictive single, ‘Baby’.

Reigning VGMA Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year was up next with emerging act, Kamelyeon setting the tone for the night with a lyrical battle.

Finally, it was time to get the clash between Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale kick-started. Shatta Wale showed up at the venue first with his entourage of 20 supporters, making themselves comfortable at the side of the stage. Shatta Wale actually had his dinner right on the stage, since Stonebwoy took a while to show up.

Stonebwoy arrived ten minutes later, but unlike his opponent, he came along with only five followers bearing BHIM flags. Upon assuming his position on stage right, Stonebwoy stirred up the stage by dashing into the camp of Shatta Wale on the left.

The clash was supposed to be based on 40 tracks each from Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale, each of which must be performed within not more than a minute according to the rules outlined by Seani B. There were also supposed to be only four rounds, Shatta Wale won the coin toss to start the first round.

The game was on! Stonebwoy and Shatta WAle took turns to deliver thrilling lyrical punches amidst some bruising insults. The exciting exhibition of their musical prowess was an irresistible sight. However, most often than not Seani B had to ask Shatta Wale’s SM4LYFers to go off the stage as they were causing a crowding on stage.

After the several rounds of lyrical battle, Shatta Wale did not stay to witness Stonebwoy’s climaxing performance nor wait for the final results of the clash. He quickly went off stage as soon as Stonebwoy began his performing viral hit, ‘Putuu’, which BhimNatives prefer to describe as “Shatta Wale ran away because he knew he had lost the clash”.

The winner of the Asaase Sound Clash

Meanwhile, the show came to an end without the announcement of the winner of the sound clash between Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale. However, the declaration was later made on the social media handles of Asaase Radio, which read:

Meaning both Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale were winners, but the bigger foe, COVID-9 was crashed. Thus, the clash was meant to finally end the longstanding fierce rivalry between the two dancehall act as well as educate Ghanaians on how to help the fight against COVID-19.

Morover, the clash was the first of its kind in Africa and it had an estimated live audience of 250 and a virtual audience of 500,000 at the venue and on social media respectively.

Meanwhile, the winner of the Asaase Sound Clash phone-in competition star prize will be announced tomorrow, Monday 14 September 2020.
